Images of Valles Caldera National Preserve – New Mexico, taken in June 2025.
Valles Caldera National Preserve protects what is the remnant of a volcano which erupted 1.2 million years ago and was 300 times greater than the Mount Saint Helens eruption in 1980.
Today, the caldera from this sunken volcano is approximately 13.7 miles in diameter. Because of past overgrazing, aggressive clear-cut logging and road construction, the prime objective of the park service is to work to restore the ecosystems of the area.
