Amache National Historic Site keeps alive the memory of the unjust incarceration of Japanese peoples in the United States, most of which were American citizens, during World War II. One of ten “relocation centers” established by Executive Order 9066, Amache, also known as the Granada Relocation Center, held over 10,000 people from 1942 through 1945, with 7,310 incarcerated at its peak population.

This is the fourth relocation center I have visited in my travels and the idea of what occurred here, and in places like this during WWII, still shocks my senses. Very basically, all these sites are located in stark and desolate areas, surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers. To imagine being ripped from my home and incarcerated in such a place is unfathomable; and for no reason except for that the country of my ancestry was involved in a war with my home country. Come to think of it, I’m Italian, why wasn’t my family subjected to the same fate? How about German Americans? The answer lies in irrational fear, misinformation, and with flawed logic.

Everyone should have to walk among the abandoned foundations and contemplate what led to such an injustice so as not to allow it to happen again.
