The discovery of copper in 1888 led to the opening of the Britannia underground copper mine in 1905. For nearly 70 years, through 1974, it was the largest copper mine in the British Empire. Today it is preserved as a National Historic Site offering guided tours of the grounds to include a ride through one of its mine shafts. Also included is a program known as Britannia ‘BOOM’, showcasing the workings of the Mill and methods around extracting and processing copper.
