Chamizal National Memorial – Texas

Because of the shifting flow of the Rio Grande River in this area, the United States and Mexico spent decades arguing over the international boundary between the two countries. On August 29, 1963, the two countries settled the dispute by agreeing to construct a permanent 4.3-mile concrete channel forming a permanent boundary. Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Gustavo Diaz Ordaz met on this site to finalize the Chamizal Convention.

The United States subsequently set aside a portion of the former Mexican land and in 1974 established the Chamizal National Memorial as a cultural bridge between the nations. Today these grounds are used for exhibits and outdoor festivals and programs celebrating the legacy of the individuals from both countries who shared this borderland.

Unfortunately, as we wait for any sort of action by the US congress, the reality of the current situation along the border is represented by the razor wired wall which towers above this peaceful tract of land.
