Hopewell Culture National Historical Park – Ohio

From 1,500 to 2,000 years ago, the Hopewell peoples developed large areas of ceremonial mounds within earthen embankments. Built along the Scioto River, these sacred places are primarily thought to be burial mounds, no one lived in these areas. The five groups protected by the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park are all set up in the same way with circle and square earthworks that are similar in dimension and proximity in all five sites.
