Cuyahoga Valley NP – Beaver Marsh – Ohio

Cuyahoga Valley National Park runs along the Cuyahoga River from Cleveland to Akron and traces the towpath of the historic Ohio & Erie Canal.

I have visited Beaver Marsh in Cuyahoga Valley National Park before, but I was in the area and couldn’t resist spending some more time there. It is a beautiful area with an abundance of plant and animal life. A trail takes you to a boardwalk that spans the marsh and puts you even closer to unspoiled nature. However, interestingly enough, this area was once farmland and then, as late as 1980, a junkyard. It was in the mid 80’s when the government purchased the land and, along with groups like the Sierra Club, began to clean it up; beavers did the rest, building dams that flooded the area, restoring the land to its natural state. Now it is a great place to spend time looking for wildlife and enjoying blooming plants to include the water lilies which are plentiful in this marsh.

What a lush landscape emerging out of the despoiled past! I have fond memories of this area when I lived near Cleveland, but this is a much better place now!
