Fort Selden Historic Site – New Mexico

Images of Fort Selden Historic Site – Southern New Mexico, taken in May 2024.

Originally a camp site on the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro trail from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Mexico City, Mexico (1,596 miles), it was established by the Confederate Army as Camp Robledo in 1861. In 1865 the site became Fort Selden with the charge to protect the regions settlers.

Fort Selden was home to several Buffalo Soldier regiments and nine of those soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor while serving in the New Mexico Territory.

In 1883, Captain Arthur MacArthur was assigned the post commander and was accompanied by his family while serving, including his young son Douglas (4 years old), who later became General of the Army (five star general) during World War II.
