George Washington Carver National Monument – Missouri

George Washington Carver National Monument honors the man that rose from slavery to become a respected scientist and racial leader of his time.

Born into slavery on this site sometime in 1864, he and his mother were kidnapped by outlaws. His mother was never found but eventually George was returned to Moses and Susan Carver who raised him until he left around 1876 to seek an education. He acquired an Agriculture degree in 1894 and a Masters in Agriculture in 1896, after which he accepted Booker T. Washington’s offer to teach at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He was respected for development of innovative farming techniques and his knowledge of plant properties, most notably, the peanut. He was also known as a symbol of interracial cooperation.

George Washington Carver died on January 5, 1943 and is buried at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama near Booker T. Washington.
