Interstate State Park is divided by the St. Croix River with half the park in Minnesota and half in Wisconsin. Both are adjacent to the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.

I hiked the Glacial Potholes Trail on the Minnesota side of the river, where one will find the deepest and most concentrated group of glacial potholes anywhere in the world. These potholes were created by fast moving, swirling whirlpools of sand and rock which wore deep holes into the basalt riverbed. Today, many of the larger potholes are filled with sand, rock and water, the deepest of which is the 60-foot deep Bottomless Pit Pothole.
