Jimmy Carter National Historical Park celebrates the life of the 39th President of the United States.

Jimmy Carter was born and raised in Plains, Georgia, a small town in west central Georgia which was primarily known for peanut farming. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, ran for several state political offices and became the governor of Georgia in 1970. In 1976, Carter ran for president and won. His accomplishments while in office include the creation of the Departments of Energy and Education, the Panama Canal Treaty, the 1979 Israel – Egypt Peace Treaty, the SALT II nuclear proliferation treaty with the Soviet Union and the 1980 signing of the Alaska Lands National Interest Conservation Act protecting over 100 million acres of land. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work advancing democracy, promoting human rights and economic and social development.
