Andersonville National Historic Site – Georgia (2024)

Images of Andersonville National Historic Site – Georgia, taken in June 2024.

Andersonville National Historic Site marks the location of one of the most notorious Civil War prison sites, and houses the National Prisoner of War Museum dedicated to all United States Prisoners of War.

Erected in February 1864, the Andersonville Prison Pen was initially 16.5 acres and expected to hold approximately 10,000 northern prisoners. It was expanded to 26.5 acres by July and by August it held over 32,000 men. With an inadequate and polluted water supply, a lack of food and medical support, and a lice and maggot infestation, the overcrowded prison pen quickly became a death sentence for many imprisoned there. Almost 13,000 northern Civil War prisoners died in 14 months, most from disease and starvation.
