Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument – Alabama

Images of Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument – Alabama, taken in June 2024.

With anger over segregationist policies in the south boiling over, Birmingham, Alabama became the center of the Civil Rights Movement with activists staging peaceful protests. Leaders implemented “Project C”, a plan of nonviolent confrontation to oppose unfair laws targeting African Americans. At a May 3, 1963 march of teenage protesters starting in Kelly Ingram Park, Commissioner of Public Safety, T. Eugene “Bull” Conner, had the Fire Department target water cannons at the protesters and then directed six German Shepherds to attack the crowd. Witnessing the scene via media outlets, some in the country objected enough to force desegregation in the local Birmingham business community.

Alabama Governor George Wallace continued to resist, forcing President John F. Kennedy to act to force school desegregation in Alabama. In response, on Sunday September 15, white supremacist members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church killing four young girls and injuring scores of others.

Public outrage and pressure over this act of domestic terrorism, ensured passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2.

The Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument honors the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, as well as all the “Foot Soldiers” and activist who sacrificed for the movement, which led to the elimination of official segregation practices.

It is important to note the phrase “the elimination of official segregation practices”, as the process continued for many years thanks to the work of the activist of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s, 2020’s, and on it goes…
