Tombstone – Arizona

Images of Tombstone – Arizona, taken in May 2023.

After silver was discovered in the area in the late 1870’s Tombstone became a boom town overnight. Almost immediately after its founding in 1879 the town had 110 saloons, 14 gambling halls and numerous dance halls and brothels. The Bird Cage Theater still stands today and was most famous for its Bird Cage Crib Compartments where the ladies of the night would service the men of the city. It was also here where the longest poker game in western history occurred, running continuously for 8 years, 5 months and 3 days.

Tombstone is known world-wide for the infamous ‘Gunfight at the O.K. Corral’ between the Earp brothers (Wyatt, Morgan and Virgil) with Doc Holliday verses the Clanton brothers (Ike and Billy) and the McLaury brothers (Tom and Frank) resulting in the deaths of Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers, all of which are buried at the equally famous Boothill Graveyard.

In the mid-1880’s the water table was penetrated, flooding the mine and it was abandoned; Tombstone nearly became a ghost town overnight. Today Tombstone is a tourist destination highlighting its history and the ‘Gunfight at the O.K. Corral’ in particular.
