George Washington Birthplace National Monument – Virginia

Along the banks of Popes Creek in Virginia, George Washington Birthplace National Monument protects the family farm and the early home of the future first president. Born at the Popes Creek site on February 22 1732, he spent only the first two to three years here before moving north to Little Hunting Creek which years later would be renamed Mount Vernon.

Along with the historical significance of this area I found some of the trails throughout the property to be very interesting, particularly the Dancing Marsh Trail where I was able to view and photograph a wide variety of dragonflies. While hiking through the forest I realized rather quickly I had forgotten to put on bug spray which made that part of the trail quite uncomfortable but from the Osprey to the Great Blue Heron and all the dragonflies to photograph, as long as I was standing in the sun things were pretty calm and peaceful.
