Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park protects four battlefields where, over eighteen months, Union and Confederate armies waged the war at the approximate halfway point between the Union capital in Washington DC and the Confederate capital at Richmond Virginia. The four battles, Fredericksburg (December 1862), Chancellorsville (May 1863) and Wilderness and Spotsylvania (May 1864) resulted in over 105,000 casualties.

Early Confederate victories at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville became the high point for the army as General Lee went on to Gettysburg in July of 1863. After that the depleted Confederate army suffered a loss at the Wilderness battle and a stalemate at Spotsylvania Court House ultimately leading to their surrender at the Appomattox Court House in April of 1865.
