Fort Monroe National Monument – Virginia

Images of Fort Monroe National Monument – Eastern Virginia, taken in July 2022.

Fort Monroe National Monument, designated a National Monument in 2011, was built to protect one of the largest natural harbors in the world (Hampton Roads) and is the largest stone fort ever constructed in the US.

The storied history of this peninsula begins with the construction of fortifications in 1609 but the current fort was constructed from 1819-34 and was a Union stronghold throughout the Civil War earning it the nickname “Gibraltar of the Chesapeake”.

I walked the ramparts which encircle this largest of forts, almost two miles all the way around, affording me unfettered views of the area inside the fort as well as outside but it was my tour through the Casemate Museum which found me standing in the cell used to hold Confederate President Jefferson Davis after the end of the Civil War. It was on one of the walls of the cell where his Union captors hung a large American flag which loomed over Davis for the entirety of his stay; a daily reminder of the defeat of his confederacy.
