Booker T. Washington National Monument – Virginia

Booker T. Washington National Monument was created to protect the birthplace of one of the most influential African American leaders in the post-Civil War era.

Born into slavery on this site on April 18, 1856, Booker T. Washington worked as a slave for the Burroughs family until he and his family became free after the end of the Civil War. It was here he worked to educate himself as much as possible, eventually allowing him to attend Hampton Normal and Agricultural School. In 1881 Washington opened Tuskegee Normal School in Alabama and is responsible for its long-term success. In the late 1800’s he became one of the most significant African American leaders and went on to advise governors, congressmen and US presidents.
