Fort Sumter – Fort Sumter National Monument – South Carolina

Images of Fort Sumter in Fort Sumter National Monument – Eastern South Carolina, taken in August 2022.

Located at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter National Monument protects Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired into the fort from Cummings Point on Morris Island by Confederate troops on April 12, 1861.

As you approach Fort Sumter by ferry from Patriot’s Point the fort looks very small; in fact, it looks even smaller from the inside. Today it is small but in its heyday the fort, instead of only one level as it is now, was three stories tall. At the start of the Civil War, it was designed to support 650 soldiers and 135 cannons.
