Valley Forge National Historical Park preserves the site of the third encampment of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It celebrates the re-imagining of the military that took place here, which is credited as the foundation of the modern US Army.

As winter approached late in 1777, General George Washington selected Valley Forge as the site of the third winter encampment of the war for independence from the British. It was here that the troops, while battling rampant disease and the winter cold, were fortified by improved conditions including a reinforced supply chain and extensive military skills training. By the following spring, with news of a newly formed alliance with France, the unified Continental Army set out after the British. Although the war lasted another five years, the transformation of the army at Valley Forge was recognized as a key turning point in the battle for independence.
