Gettysburg National Military Park – Pennsylvania

Images of Gettysburg National Military Park – Southern Pennsylvania, taken in May 2022.

Memorializing the largest battle on American soil, the Gettysburg National Military Park details the steps of both the Union and Confederate armies over the fateful three days of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War.

It’s hard to comprehend. Over three days more than 51,000 soldiers were dead, wounded or missing. McPherson Ridge, Little Round Top and the Valley of Death, the Wheatfield; all crucial battle sites where the two armies faced off in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. On the third and climactic day of the fighting, July 3rd 1863, General Lee’s Confederate army lost over 5,000 men in one hour in a final attack against General Meade’s Union soldiers known as ‘Pickett’s Charge’. One day later Lee’s army began its retreat to Virginia, ending the general’s bold plan to invade the North.

Months later, in November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln would come to Gettysburg to the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery and deliver a 272-word, two-minute speech forever remembered as The Gettysburg Address.
