Eisenhower National Historic Site – Pennsylvania

Images of Eisenhower National Historic Site – Southern Pennsylvania, taken in May 2022.

The Pennsylvania home of President Dwight David Eisenhower and his wife Mamie are preserved in the Eisenhower National Historic Site adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park.

Born in 1890, Eisenhower chose to go to West Point and pursue a military career. He served stateside during World War I but found himself promoted rapidly while serving in Europe during World War II and was eventually appointed the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces and directed the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

After retiring from the service as a five-star general, Eisenhower was elected President in 1952 and served two terms during which, among other things, he ended the Korean War, authorized the construction of US interstate highway system, established NASA, and oversees the U-2 spy plane crisis with the USSR.

In 1961 he and Mamie retire to Gettysburg, the only home they ever owned, where Eisenhower raised champion Black Angus cattle and where they lived out the rest of their lives after which the property was turned over to the National Park Service to become a National Historic Site.
