Governors Island National Monument – New York

For over 200 years Governors Island has served a military role in protecting the harbor around the tip of Manhattan Island. Initially it was established as a major Army headquarters in the 1700s, became a military prison during the Civil War and more recently served as the largest Coast Guard base in the nation. It is also famous for providing Wilber Wright use of the Parade Ground as a takeoff and landing spot for his 1909 flight around the Statue of Liberty, the first successful flight over water.

Governors Island National Monument was established to protect two forts on the island, Fort Jay and Fort Williams with most of the rest of the island protected as the Governors Island Historic District.
