Clinton Castle National Monument – New York

Initially built in 1811 as a defensive fort off the coast of Manhattan Island, Castle Clinton eventually became part of the island by landfill in the 1850s when the city created Battery Park. Over time the fort was used as a cultural gathering center (1824-1854), an immigration center (1855-1890), an aquarium (1896-1941) and finally as a National Monument.
Clinton Castle National Monument, created in 1946, is now a hub for city cruises to places like the Statue of Liberty. Unfortunately for me it is undergoing an extensive renovation which limited exploration of the site.
