African Burial Ground National Monument – New York

In 1991 construction of the federal office building on this site uncovered human remains. Further excavation and research revealed this to be part of a larger 6.6-acre African Burial Ground used from approximately 1626 through the late 1700s. In 2003 the remains of 419 individuals were reinterred on the site, in seven mahogany coffins, in the Ancestral Reinterment Ground. African Burial Ground National Monument in lower Manhattan protects the site of the seven burial mounds as well as the monument created to honor the Africans brought to the Americas via the slave trade.
