Mount Washington State Park – New Hampshire

Images of Mount Washington State Park – Northern New Hampshire, taken in June 2022.

Mount Washington (6,288 ft.) in the White Mountains National Forest, part of the Presidential Range and stopover along the Appalachian Trail, is widely known for having some of the harshest weather in the world. Winters in particular are extremely cold and the winds can pose a problem any time of the year. On April 12, 1934 the highest wind velocity ever recorded (not associated with a tornado) was measured here clocking in at 231 miles per hour!

I was only in New Hampshire on a stopover when I realized that I was just twenty miles or so from this interesting peak and decided to make the climb. The only way up from the east, my side of the mountain, was via the Mount Washington Auto Road; the oldest man-made tourist attraction in the US.

For the low, low price of just $39 you not only get to drive your own car up and down a steep dangerous road but you also get a bumper sticker which reads “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington”. I didn’t have the heart to tell them that “this car” has climbed Pikes Peak, roughly 8,000 feet taller than Mt. Washington; although that road was much wider and much safer than the road up Mt. Washington. It was an interesting drive and to tell you the truth in the end I actually felt it was worth it for the interesting scenery including the desolate Alpine landscape and the view of the famous Presidential Range.
