Vicksburg National Military Park – Mississippi

Vicksburg National Military Park tells the story of one of the major campaigns of the Civil War. Along with the Battle of Gettysburg, which was raging at the same time as this battle, the two major Union victories were considered a turning point of the Civil War.

Sitting on the banks of the Mississippi River both the Union and Confederate forces knew the importance of control of the town of Vicksburg. For the south it was a major supply route and if the north were to take control of this bend in the Mississippi River it would cut off and divide the southern states. Starting on May 1, 1863, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant attacked the Confederate stronghold at Vicksburg, led by General John C. Pemberton, until their surrender on July 4. The victory effectively split the Confederacy and cut off the states of Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana from the rest of the south.
