Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument – Mississippi

Images of Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument – Central Mississippi, taken in October 2022.

Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument, located in Jackson Mississippi, protects the house where Medgar and Myrlie Evers raised their family and worked diligently on civil rights causes. The family moved into this home when Medgar became the Mississippi NAACP Field Director in 1955. Because of his activism, Medgar was repeatedly attacked, including an attempt to run him over, and the house was firebombed. The family was forced to take actions to protect themselves to include moving the children’s beds onto the floor and removing the front door.

After attending organizational meetings, Medgar returned home just after midnight on June 12, 1963 and was entering through the door in the carport when a shot rang out, striking and passing through his body. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive.

The shooter, Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the racist and segregationist White Citizens’ Council was arrested immediately after the murder but was set free even though it was his rifle that fired the shot that killed Evers and his fingerprints were found at the scene. Later, two all-male, all-white juries deadlocked and it would be 31 years before he was finally convicted and sent to prison.

In the aftermath of the assassination, Myrlie Evers continued to champion her husbands causes and was eventually elected chair of the NAACP.
