Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument – Maine

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument protects approximately 87,500 acres of wilderness to the east of Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park. This remote park has limited access and all roads are dirt and gravel requiring, at a minimum, a high-clearance all wheel drive vehicle.

I was able to take the only road accessing the park, the Katahdin Loop Road, which carved its way through some of the thickest forest I have ever seen. Early in the morning as I drove into the park, I witnessed several deer and a moose cow cross the road in front of me but once they got back into the forest they were gone; it was so thick I could not see them even if they were still standing next to the road. Conversely, the areas around the ponds were open to the forest edge and provided limited viewing of small wildlife. Overall, the park is a beautiful, peaceful area with spectacular views of Mount Katahdin.
