Hanford Reach National Monument – Washington

From 1943 to 2000 the area now included in the Hanford Reach National Monument served as a security buffer for the Hanford Reach nuclear production facility. Now run by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the monument protects the last free-flowing, non-tidal stretch of the Columbia River and an important salmon spawning area. It is also one of the largest remaining examples of a shrub-steppe ecosystem in Washington.
