Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge – Utah

A dirt road allows one to drive through the marshes, alkali mudflats and open water of the South Bay area of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge protects the habitat of over 250 species of migratory birds which pass through this area on an annual basis.

It was ‘off season’ and in the mid-90’s when I drove through the refuge but I was still was able to view a large number of birds from my car…which I made sure to confine myself to because there were also swarms of biting flies as large as birds, or so it seemed, ready to attack any and all living things. Whenever I saw a bird I wanted to photograph, I would have to roll the window down, quickly focus, shoot and then roll the window back up…the things I do to get the shot!
