Newberry National Volcanic Monument – Newberry Caldera – Oregon (2021)

Images of Newberry National Volcanic Monument – Newberry Caldera – Southwestern Oregon, taken in September 2021.

I visited the Lava Lands ( https://www.pbase.com/jfp_photo/2017_or_newbery_nvm ) section of Newberry National Volcanic Monument near Bend Oregon in 2017 but was unable to see the Newberry Caldera to the south because it was closed due to the area being covered by late season snowfall.

This time through the area I visited in September before any snowfall and was able to drive up to Paulina Peak (7,984 ft.) to get the full view of the Newberry Caldera to include the volcanic cones, lava flow area and two sparkling lakes. Later I would hike over jagged lava rock along the Obsidian Flow Trail for some interesting views of the lava which is comprised primarily of volcanic obsidian and pumice rock. Interestingly enough, the eruption which produced this flow happened only 1,300 years ago.
