Crater Lake National Park – Oregon

One of a string of active volcanoes in the Cascade Range, Mount Mazama erupted 7,700 years ago and then collapsed upon itself forming a crater which over the centuries filled with snow and rain. As the deepest lake in the United States (1,943 feet) Crater Lake owes its incredible clarity and color to the lack of sediment in the water due to the fact there are no streams which feed into the lake.

As with most of my destinations this year, wind direction played a big role in determining what I would be viewing, or not viewing, as I arrived in Crater Lake National Park. For my first visit to the park, fires to the west filled the crater with smoke so all I could see were outlines of Wizard Island and the lake rim. Several days later as the winds shifted so they were coming out of the east, the air cleared and I was once again able to gaze upon the beauty of Crater Lake. For a time, the air became calm and the deep blue waters became absolutely still, allowing me to view the crater rim, Wizard Island and their reflections in the lake as they were meant to be seen.
