Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge – Nevada

Images of Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge – Southwestern Nevada, taken in April 2021.

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge protects some of the worlds most endangered species of endemic pupfish and their habitats. Once part of a large system of shallow lakes and rivers, this area has evolved over time to a more arid desert region with only a few small isolated springs. These scattered springs continue to support life to include the pupfish that were trapped here during the retreat of the water over the last 11,000 years.

I came to the eastern side of the Amargosa Range to visit Death Valley National Park and found myself staying just a few miles from this important national refuge. It was incredible to come upon these crystal-clear springs in this arid hostile desert. The spring water is so unbelievably clear and it was a thrill to see the tiny endangered pupfish which are found nowhere else on earth.
