Glacier National Park, West – Montana (2021)

The majesty of the Going to the Sun Road and the surrounding landscape is most evident on the west side of Glacier National Park. The road is not only built into the sheer granite cliffs but also seemingly hangs from them. It is one of the most amazing roads in the world and not for the faint of heart as going towards Logan Pass you drive on the edge of the abyss and going away from the pass the passenger side of your car comes within inches of the jagged granite. I, of course, thrive on the challenge of an exciting drive and one of my trips into the park became even more exciting when I encountered a black bear as I rounded a blind corner. Now, there’s no going fast on this road so I had plenty of time to stop when the bear appeared in front of me and nonchalantly made his way to the oncoming lane. I promptly grabbed my camera and began to shoot catching him coming toward me and passing directly next to me before he took a right turn over a stone wall and into the brush. After dealing with all the traffic in this park it was a pleasure to be able to say I shared the Going to the Sun Road with a black bear.
