Lewis and Clark National Forest – Crystal Lake – Montana

I learned about Crystal Lake in the Lewis and Clark National Forest when I visited the local BLM (Bureau of Land Management) office in Lewistown Montana looking for information on Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. The woman at the front desk gave me a brochure and suggested it was a local gem worth visiting. It was. Cooler than the surrounding area which, like most of the west, was in the midst of yet another extreme heat wave; the clear waters of the lake and the picturesque surrounding landscape was a nice break from the farm and range land which is prevalent in the center of the state.

Hey... I know that place. When I lived there we would off-load our snowmobiles there and then ride south over the mountains to Route 12, have lunch & gas-up, then ride back... 6 hours of fun. I watched the guys ride on the "frozen" lake one morning... throwing up water rooster tails as the ice was only 1 inch thick and they were breaking through. It was a beautiful location. >Tim
