Bear Trap Canyon and Ennis Lake – Montana

Constructed in 1906, the hydroelectric dam on the Madison River in Bear Trap Canyon created Ennis Lake. Today, a dirt road circles around the lake with a connecting road which winds through Bear Trap Canyon past the dam.

I drove the roads twice as it is a peaceful area with many interesting views; the rugged canyon, the small dam and the picturesque lake. Smoke from several wildfires in the area muted views of some of the landscape but also created other fascinating effects to include deepening the red color on the countryside and in the skies at sunset. Likewise, the image of the trees on the banks of the lake takes on an almost ‘impressionist’ style because of the thickness of the air.
