Route 66 – The Mother Road – California

Images on and along US Route 66 – The Mother Road – Eastern California, taken in October 2021.

This 105-mile section of US Route 66 (now known as the National Trails Highway) running from Ludlow to Needles through Mojave Trails National Monument is the most pristine, undeveloped stretch of the ‘Mother Road’ remaining today. Built in 1926 as the beginning of the federal highway system it was the shortest route across the country linking Chicago Illinois to Santa Monica California and is perhaps the most famous highway in America.

Unfortunately, a large section of the road is currently closed due to several bridges being washed out. I went around the detour signs to explore further but had to turn around eventually. Along the way I was treated to the site of several old abandoned buildings and the town of Amboy where Roy’s Motel and Café still stands as a remnant of the past glory days of this historic road.
