Mojave National Preserve – California

The Mojave National Preserve encompasses most of the Mojave Desert and includes many ecological habitats from the Pinion-Juniper Woodlands to Desert Dunes and washes. About half the Park is designated as wilderness.

The varied landscapes were a pleasant surprise as I drove through the park; I have always enjoyed desert settings but it was nice to see so many different habitats in one area. Highlights included volcanic fields, several Joshua Tree Forests, the Kelso Dunes and the rugged Granite Mountains to the south. Blue skies and high clouds made for some beautiful scenery. Sadly, a large Joshua Tree Forest to the northwest of the town of Cima had been completely destroyed by fire and now only included the blackened remnants of thousands of trees. I also found myself face to face with a large Tarantula, big enough to notice as it crossed the dirt road, and I stopped to make my acquaintance and get a few pictures before we each went on our way.
