Death Valley National Park – Stovepipe Wells Area – California

The history of Death Valley National Park includes many successful mining operations including the gold mine at the Keane Wonder Mill and Mine which is now a ruin where one can view a great example of an intact aerial tramway. Most people will also recognize the name Borax, the company that mined the mineral and had it transported 165 miles in the famous 20-mule-team wagons. And in the Panamint Range the Charcoal Kilns, still standing today, were used in the late 1800s to fuel silver and lead ore mining.

One of the more striking views in the valley is that of the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes near Stovepipe Wells. These dunes rise almost 100 feet from the valley floor and are particularly interesting at sunrise and sunset as the shadows change the view of the sand.

Finally at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge to the east of the valley is a small plot of land held by the Park Service and Death Valley National Park called the Devils Hole. Here the National Park Service and the US Fish and Wildlife Service monitors water quality and levels to protect the endangered Devils Hole Pupfish, which is on the brink of extinction.
