Death Valley National Park – Badwater Basin – California

While visiting Death Valley National Park in 2013 I attempted to hike out onto the Salt Flats at Badwater only to be forced by the searing heat to retreat to my car. It was 125 degrees that day and the sun reflected off of the bright white surface was estimated to be approximately 180 to 190 degrees. The next day the official temperature was 129 degrees so I was never able to complete that hike.

This time around the temperature was a chilly 92 degrees allowing me to finally hike the Badwater Basin Salt Flats and get to view the amazing salt crystal formations and odd geometric shapes formed when the salt seeps to the surface through cracks in the flats. It was a truly interesting and exciting hike that can only be experienced at the lowest point in North America; the Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park.
