Alabama Hills National Scenic Area – California

Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in central California and managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area has been used as a location for over 400 movies and television shows. Congress designated it as a National Scenic Area in 2019.

Many people come to this park for its rich movie history but I was there for the fantastic rock formations, arches, windows and spectacular views of Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous US at 14,505 feet, and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Since the Sierras are to the west of the park it was imperative to get up early to catch the best light on not only the mountains but all the unique rock formations. Most famous of these formations is Mobius Arch which is perfectly situated to allow one to use it as a frame around Mount Whitney (images 8, 12 and 13). Just a few yards away I also took the opportunity to crawl up a granite ledge to shoot several images of the Sierras through Lathe Arch (images 17 and 18). Then it was off to spend the better part of the day locating several of the many arches which dot this amazing park. Counting the two aforementioned arches, I was able to locate a total of fourteen arches and windows and photographically feast on the stunning rock formations and views of the Sierras as you will see in this slightly larger than normal gallery. Fear not however, you are only getting 70 of the 925 images I took while exploring the park!
