Yellowstone National Park – West Side Geyser Basins – Wyoming (2019)

Between Upper Geyser Basin and Old Faithful in the south and Norris Geyser Basin in the north sits an impressive array of smaller but no less striking basins containing geysers, springs, pools, fumaroles and paintpots. Best known of these is the Midway Geyser Basin with two of the largest thermal features in the park; Excelsior Geyser and the Grand Prismatic Spring. The last time I was here the only way to view these amazing objects was to walk the boardwalk that weaved its way around and between them; impressive enough but today a trail has been added to an observation point on a nearby hillside that gives one a complete overhead view of these beautiful pools. The colors are striking and although you could easily grasp the scale of these objects from the boardwalk, looking down on them is certainly awe inspiring.

Another favorite spot of mine is the Artist Paintpots. I love coming here to watch the mud bubbles burst and it’s even more fun to try to capture their unique images as they explode. The consistency of the mud here is thicker than in some other spots, like the Fountain Paint Pot area (fourth row), so the bubbles get larger and propel themselves farther when they finally explode. I was tickled to get some interesting images, in particular the one in the center of the sixth row, which you can see through just before the top blows off.

I’ve seen lots of images of Yellowstone, but these are absolutely the best. And the exploding mud bubbles are beautiful and unique. Thanks!
