Gateway Arch National Park – Missouri (2019)

Gateway Arch National Park commemorates the push westward by settlers of the 1800s. Built between 1963 and 1965 the arch is a 630 foot tall stainless steel, carbon steel and cement structure that is also 630 feet at the base. Formerly known as the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, it was renamed as a National Park in 2018.

I visited the park on an incredibly beautiful day and realized early on that this park was all about the arch and the different angles I could shoot it from. There is an Old Cathedral and the Old Courthouse where the famous Dred Scott case took place but other than that it’s all about the arch. I rode to the arch’s observation deck in small pod that moves along then stops and readjusts its angle, moves along and readjusts, moves along and readjusts until it reaches the top in just about four minutes. Once at the top I was treated to a wonderful view of the city of St. Louis and Old Courthouse with, as I had planned with my early ticket purchase, the shadow of the arch on the landscape below.

Once back on planet earth I visited the Old Courthouse and its spectacular dome and spent some time learning the details around the Dred Scott case and its implications with respect to slavery and the Civil War but beyond that this place is all about the arch. So I spent some more time taking arch shots, which were interesting because of the constantly changing angle of the sun, and then moved on. The arch is spectacular but I’m not sure this place rises to the level of a National Park; this place is a museum dedicated to the westward expansion that is really all about the arch.

Jerry, Great pictures. I was up there for my mom's birthday august 8th. You need to go to the city Museum near the Arch. Its not the kind of museum you might think it is. Google it.https://www.citymuseum.org/

What incredible views of the famous arch! The sunrise shots and the beautiful blue sky really bring this gem to life. And I loved the new arch shot through the antique glass - a true time warp if there ever was one! Thanks for posting!
