Woodford Reserve Distillery – Kentucky (2019)

Woodford Reserve, one of the oldest and smallest distilleries, sits on Kentucky’s oldest distilling site where whiskey was first crafted in 1812. Today the distillery uses a process which includes sour mash fermentation, distillation in copper pot stills, heat cycled barrelhouses and charred and toasted white oak barrels to give its products their color and signature flavor.

The tour was incredibly educational and interesting as we followed the process of making bourbon from distillery to bottling but I would be remiss if I didn’t include the ultimate step of tasting! As the tour came to an end we were ushered into a nicely appointed tasting room where when seated we had before us a dark chocolate bourbon ball and three shot glasses of freshly minted bourbon; Straight, Double-Oaked and Rye. Our guide then walked us through the tasting process one shot at a time. I later purchased a bottle of my favorite, the Woodford Reserve Double-Oaked Bourbon.
