Old Friends Farm – Kentucky (2019)

Old Friends Farm is a retirement home for thoroughbreds founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen who was inspired by the news that Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand had died in a slaughterhouse. Opened as a “living-history museum of horse racing”, visitors are able to interact with over 175 horses at three locations.

Two of the Georgetown farm’s most famous residents, Silver Charm and War Emblem, won the first two legs of the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby and Preakness) in 1997 and 2002 respectively. Interestingly enough the horses that beat each of them at Belmont, Touch Gold and Sarava, are in adjacent fields.

During the tour our group was lucky enough to be joined by Old Friends founder Michael Blowen who captured everyone’s attention with his interesting stories regarding the horses, their owners, trainers and jockeys.
