Indiana Dunes National Park – Indiana (2019)

Wetlands, dunes, forest and savanna ecosystems created as little as 10,000 years ago by advancing glacial ice sheets make up the incredibly ecologically diverse area protected today by Indiana Dunes National Park. Set aside by the US Congress in 1966 as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore this park became the nation’s 61st National Park on February 15, 2019.

Upon hearing of the establishment of this park I immediately went into planning mode to redraw my 2019 trip to include a visit. Now having grown up on the south side of Chicago I had already visited here as a kid and in fact my Dad worked in the town of Gary which borders the park. But I needed to come here to explore it as an adult and to photograph the area as I have all the other parks. The dunes are much like any other sea or lakeshore; however, it is the extraordinary variety of plants and animals that makes this park unique. In fact this park ranks 7th in plant diversity out of the more than 400 nation national parks in the US park system.
