Fort Frederica National Monument – Georgia (2019)

Fort Frederica National Monument protects the remains of a colonial fort founded by English soldier and politician James Oglethorpe. The fort was created by a King George II land grant in 1732 to hold off the Spanish Empire in the region. Oglethorpe built the fort and town for the “worthy poor” whom he transplanted from Great Britain.

Oglethorpe and his troops, who had been repelled when they attacked St. Augustine, beat back a Spanish invasion at the Battle of Bloody Marsh on St. Simon Island in 1742. This battle represented the last threat to the Georgia territory by the declining Spanish Empire.
