Gulf Islands National Seashore – Florida

Gulf Islands National Seashore protects a portion of the long chain of barrier islands that stretch along the coasts of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. The region includes wildlife areas, beaches and several forts and batteries used in the past to protect the coast from attacking forces.

This stop was designed as a respite along the long trek from St. Augustine Florida to Houston Texas; a day off from all the obligatory driving to relax and visit one of our national seashores. It was indeed a nice break as I was able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Gulf of Mexico and the beautiful white sand beaches as well as tour another interesting fort from out of the past.

What I did not anticipate was my RV overheating and breaking down on the way out of town precipitating a much longer stay in the area; one which saw me contributing much more money to the local economy than I had expected. I have had a cooling problem from day one in this vehicle but as much as I tried to get the issue diagnosed no one could seem to find the problem and it finally reared its ugly head on the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay. After a futile attempt to once again get underway I pulled into a local truck stop and shut her down…time of death, 11:27 am. For the next four days I lived in my RV parked in the yard of the Milton Forklift & Heavy Equipment service where owner Ricky and his team picked up the pieces and got me back on the road running better than ever before.

One of those blips on the radar that happens from time to time; disaster followed by a rise from the ashes, only this time thank goodness there were no actual ashes…
