Fort Matanzas National Monument – Florida (2019)

Fort Matanzas National Monument was created in 1924 to protect the unique architecture of the Spanish fort built on Rattlesnake Island from 1740 – 1742. It was placed here in an attempt to prevent the British from making their way to St. Augustine.

In 1565, prior to the construction of the fort, the Spanish massacred 250 shipwrecked Frenchmen in this area after which the inlet was known as Matanzas Inlet meaning “the Slaughter”.

Unfortunately earlier storm damage shut down the ferry to Rattlesnake Island preventing us from being able to tour the fort. Instead we hiked several nearby trails.
