Sand to Snow National Monument – California

Sand to Snow National Monument includes portions of the San Bernardino Mountains, the focal point being Southern California’s highest peak, San Gorgonio at 11,500 feet.

This national monument is relatively new, having been authorized in 2016, and is maintained by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in conjunction with the US Forest Service (USFS). There are no roads into the park although California Highway 62 runs through a portion of the eastern section of the park in the Morongo Valley. This is also where there is access to the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve which has been annexed by the park. It has a well maintained trail system through the desert and to marshes with an abundance of trees, bushes and the Fan Palm, the only palm native to California.
